Wyoming is home to cowboys, wide-open spaces and beautiful western scenery. For its students it’s also home to quality education. Distance learning opportunities are abundant in the state, making it more convenient than ever for students to obtain a college education. Whether at a community college or four-year college or university, Wyoming students have access to programs spanning all realms of possibility. No matter what a person’s interests, age, motivation or location Wyoming colleges have classes and degrees that will satisfy their educational and professional needs.
The University of Wyoming provides students many chances to stimulate their minds through the college’s Outreach School. By using the latest in educational technology, the university is able to deliver classes in a wide variety of formats to students statewide. Several Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are available online. Bachelor’s degrees are available in Business Administration and the RN to BSN program. Master’s degrees are offered online in Education, with specializations in Adult Education and Instructional Technology. Other degrees are available in Business Administration and Nurse Educator. An online certificate is available as an Early Childhood Program Director.
Eastern Wyoming College offers students many distance learning options. The college uses several different delivery modes of its distance learning classes such as compressed video, telecourses, internet and web-based conferencing. Compressed videos allow classes to be broadcast to any high school or college in Wyoming. Telecourses are delivered by video or public television stations, and do include an extra fee in addition to purchasing textbooks. Internet classes are the main mode of delivery for most students. In addition to needing basic computer skills, high-speed internet and e-mail are necessary for maximum results. Web conferencing is used when a group of students needs to meet for a project or other activity. Students in these classes will need a webcam plus a headset and microphone attached to their computer. Associate degrees are available in Criminal Justice, Business Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Western Wyoming Community College is recognized throughout the Rocky Mountain region as a leader in distance education. Many Associate degrees are offered, and with transfer agreements in place with many colleges and universities students can transfer credits to those schools and have a great head start toward a higher degree. Associate degrees available include Criminal Justice, Social Work, Marketing, Accounting, Business Administration and other areas. Certificates, ranging in length of study from 15 hours to one year, can be earned in Journalism, Digital Design Technology, Emergency Management and Web Site Development.
The Wyoming Distance Learning Consortium is an advisory committee made up of representatives from community colleges and the University of Wyoming. Its purpose is to encourage cooperation and coordination of distance learning services amongst all of the state’s colleges. The consortium stays up-to-date on the latest research on distance learning, and attempts to work with schools to put research findings into practical use at the student level.
